The Dudley Observatory has a collection of astronomical clocks. Some of the items in our collection are shown here.
Fasoldt Clock
High precision astronomical clocks owned by the observatory included an astronomical clock purchased in Altona, Germany, in 1856; a clock made in the mid-nineteenth century by Charles Fasoldt, an Albany, NY. clock maker, and two clocks made by Riefler in Germany and purchased after the Observatory’s move to its second Albany site in 1893.
Riefler Clocks
Two astronomical regulator clocks made by Riefler of Germany were purchased after the Observatory’s move to its second Albany site in 1893. One clock kept universal time, and one sidereal. Their vacuum housings minimized atmosphereic effects on the pendulums.
