A Summer Teacher PD Opportunity

The Dudley Observatory is partnering with Siena College to offer Astronomy at the Frontier- a Summer Teacher Professional Development opportunity July 20-23, 2020. This workshop is designed to introduce teachers to online astronomical databases, and provide them with experience and hands-on activities that they can utilize in their classroom. In this 4-day workshop, teachers will learn how to access data from the Exoplanet Archive, the Gaia satellite, the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys, and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Each day will consist of lessons on one of the aforementioned topics, a tutorial on how to use the databases, hands-on activities using the data, and a working lunch and hack session where teachers can work on incorporating these activities into their curriculum.

The Dudley Observatory is partnering with Prof. John Moustakas in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Siena College to offer Astronomy at the Frontier. Thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation, we will be able to offer this workshop for free to a limited number of teachers. If you are interested in participating, please CLICK HERE to complete the application.

The due date for applications is extended until June 15th, and we anticipate selecting our attendees by the end of June.

Note: Teachers who participated in Dudley Observatory’s summer PD program in the past are welcome to apply for this opportunity, but there may be some overlap in content. If you have questions about whether or not this workshop is for you, please feel free to reach out at
